I had a real lucky day at the dollar store a few weeks ago - the one I go to has a cooler so they have hashbrowns and other frozen stuff. I was lucky enough to get there when hey had 1 lb packs of Jennie O ground turkey, Sargento cheese, and 15.4 oz cans of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup.

Here's the original recipie:

Hash Brown Casserole
like Cracker Barrel's®
Rich, cheesy baked potato casserole.

Prep. Time: 0:45
Serves: 8

10.25 oz. can condensed cream of chicken soup
8 oz. Colby cheese - grated
1/2 cup melted butter OR margarine
1 sm. onion - minced
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 lb. bag frozen shredded hash browns

-Spray a 13" X 9" X 2" baking pan with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
-In a bowl, combine soup, cheese, butter, onion, salt, and pepper.
-Gently fold the potatoes into the mixture and pour into prepared pan.
-Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes, until heated through and top is browned.

http://recipes.robbiehaf.com/C/73.htm

Here's my variation on it:

1 15.4 oz. can condensed cream of mushroom soup
8 oz. Cheddar cheese - shredded
1/2 cup melted butter OR margarine
1 tsp dried minced onion
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 lb. bag frozen shredded hash browns
1 lb. ground turkey

-Brown the turkey, drain it and set aside.
-Spray a 13" X 9" X 2" baking pan with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
-In a bowl, combine soup, cheese, butter, onion, turkey, salt, and pepper.
-Gently fold the potatoes into the mixture and pour into prepared pan.
-Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes, until heated through and top is browned.

It turned out well, so I'll definitely make it again. Plus, it only cost me $6 and I'll get 5 or 6 meals from this one dish.

12:58 am - Short Update
Its 1am and I can't sleep. I've got some sort of viral thing that hopefully is getting better.

Today was a better day. I actually had some energy, though I was still freezing! A good friend got me some groceries earlier so I didn't have to go out. So tomorrow, or technically later today, I'll make another pot of chicken soup. I might also try a casserole recipe that I found for cheesy hashbrowns.

I spent time today crocheting afghan squares and watching clips of old General Hospital episodes from the late 80s and mid 90s (when it used to be good).

02:25 am - Blast from the past - Detroit Rock - Bittersweet Alley
So I was talking to lisbet earlier tonight about the music we listened to when we were young. I asked her if she remembered Bittersweet Alley, a band from the Detroit area. that I remembered from my highschool/college days, and she knew the name. I did a search and found the following site: http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/bitter_sweet_alley/bitter_sweet_alley_audio.html

The song I remember best is "Time to Move" and I like it as much as I did then. Gods, I haven't heard that song in about 20 years. A real blast from the past.

More on Typography:

The Internet Archive has all these digitized versions of old books. Some of them are really neat, including a Specimen Book And Catalogue 1923 from American Type Founders Company. The scan itself isn't great, many of the pages are rotated but its still lovely to look at. Pages and pages of old style type and design with flourishy borders and printers marks.

The problem is, this amazing book was scanned in as an 1150 page djvu file. I've been using the LizardTech DJVU Viewer, but I'd really rather not look at this document in a browser. I also wanted to see if I could split it up into smaller pieces.

So, I found WinDJView and I'm really pleased with it so far. It opened the document successfully and I can see all the pages. So now I'm using PDF995 to save this document into 50-100 page pdf files.

Isn't technology wonderful, much of the time?!

03:39 pm - Returned from Booksale Victorious!
So today was the Ann Arbor chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Booksale. I went, planning to only get 2 bags full, and I managed to not go over that limit (by much). Thankfully [info]lisbet was kind enough to take my few extra books and put them in one of her bags.

I also promised to _finally_ join the AAUW at their meeting this coming Tuesday. Its an organization that I support and who knows, maybe I'll be able to join some of their interest groups. Though I hope it doesn't rain. I've gone to their Open House a couple of times in years past, and it rained heavily both times. This time, at least, I won't have to take a vacation day just to attend. I used to work late on Tuesday nights, but not any longer.

After the sale, I went to lunch with [info]lisbet and [info]uberrod at Red Robin. Now I'm home, surrounded by my new books!

10:55 pm - Some Typography, Illustration, and Graphic Design Links
I've been indulging my love of graphic design, art and typography sites, and wanted to share some links:

A Goudy Catalogue - Peter Bruhn @ Fountain (a digital type foundry) shares one of Mr. Goudy's catalogues from 1914

Bibliodyssey - Fabulous old illustrations from rare books

Paul Lloyd Fonts @ typOasis - I love Paul's fonts. If you like Goudy, check out New Style which is inspired by his work.

Nick Curtis Fonts @ typOasis - I also love Nick Curtis' fonts. Check out Chanticleer and Coventry Garden, which are 2 of my favorites.

DTG: Design, Type & Graphics - Design Center - This is the place where I first learned about Nick Curtis' fonts and found so much more interesting stuff about design and typeography.

05:55 pm - Adventures in Beta Testing
Right now, we are beta testing the new version of our software, of course in-between all the other calls we handle on the commercial versions of the product.

Now, I'm no stranger to doing this, so I expect problems to occur. I started getting my environment ready last week. That was why I installed Oracle 10.

Sometime after this install, I lost all my ODBC datasource drivers except for Oracle 10g. I don't know what caused them all to disappear. I had deleted some registry entries for the previous version of Oracle I'd had on this machine and maybe I deleted something I shouldn't have. I'm not sure. Anyway, the biggest mistake I made was deleting from the registry without backing it up first. I know better than to do that, I was just trying to do too many things at one time and it slipped my mind. This is a Win2k3 system so there's no system restore feature on it.

Anyway, installing MDAC didn't help (actually, I don't think it did anything at all). I tried to reinstall office and got the first helpful error message since this started:

Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access Database. ODBC error 6: Component not found in the registry. Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can access it.

Then, thanks to Google, I found the following Microsoft Knowledgebase article:

http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=818954

I followed the instructions for the second solution, Install Mdac.inf and low and behold, my ODBC drivers showed up again! Then I reinstalled Office 2003 and it worked.

After all of that, I was finally able to finish installing the beta version of our software. So right now, my machine is where it should have been at the end of yesterday. Fun, fun.
